| 05/15/2008 02:38 PM Cars.com Reviews the 2008 Infiniti M35 The Infiniti M35? That’s not a hot new model like all the other reviews we’ve been delivering the past month. What’s going on? Well, Infiniti did make some minor changes to the M last year, especially its Sport trim, which is what we had a chance to review. Kelsey Mays got the assignment, but only after an earlier loan of the car in February ended with it getting stuck in a few inches of solid ice on my street. In better weather, Kelsey had an easier time delivering a review. |
| 05/15/2008 01:31 PM $4 Gas Should Be Here June 6th
I watched Matt Lauer try to get Exxon’s CEO to spill the beans about gas prices this morning. It was an interesting exchange and the executive was probably one of the best-prepared interviews I’ve seen on the show. You can watch the video below. Because most analysts don’t foresee gas prices going down until after the busy summer driving season, we should easily see $4 a gallon gas nationally very soon. I picked June 6 because if we continue our pace of the past month or so of a penny a day, that’s when we’ll hit the magical $4 mark. Lauer kept asking if this is when people would “walk away” from their cars. Because Chicago and other areas have been dealing with gas this high for a while, I don’t foresee that, and Exxon’s chief also pointed out that for many Americans there is no alternative mode of transportation to get to work. What do you think will happen June 6 — or whatever day gas hits $4? Will we be desensitized to the price hikes by then? Will the recent failed comedy “Carpoolers” be more poignant? Let us know. |
| 05/15/2008 01:44 PM TummyShield Protects Unborn
Pregnant women now have a new option for buckling up. The TummyShield is a seat belt designed to remove the lap belt that could potentially hurt an unborn child during a collision — even a minor one. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, four out of five deaths of unborn infants occur because of vehicular accidents, and many of these accidents are minor. The lap belt is what does the damage. Rather than having a lap belt, the TummyShield has two straps that buckle across the thighs, securing the passenger in the same way but without the risk of putting dangerous pressure across a woman's abdomen. The device is available from the manufacturer for $188. Pregnant Lady Seatbelt Goes Over Thighs, Not Stomach (Jalopnik) |
| 05/15/2008 10:55 AM Weekend Athlete: A Word About Bike Racks
That's not to say I’ve never used a bike rack. In fact, I've used both rear and roof-mounted racks in the past, and I can state for the record which I prefer, and that would be a roof rack. Why not a rear rack? For starters, I have to parallel park a lot — both at races and in the city where I live. The problem with a rear rack is that instead of accidentally nudging the car behind you with your bumper, it’s your fancy race bike that takes the nudge. Before you scream “Learn to park!” remember someone could park behind you while you're racing and nudge your fancy rack. That's not good either, is it? “But,” you say, “I use a rack that sits over the trunk of the car so the bike doesn't stick out past the bumper.” That's good — it does eliminate the bike-as-bumper issue. However, in my experience, once you put one of those over your trunklid, you can’t get in the trunk. I like to use my trunk for carrying stuff at races. Others may prefer using the rear seat. To each his own. Now, with a roof rack, you can still get in the trunk and parking isn't an issue. Also, depending on the roof rack system, it can be modified with attachments to let you carry more things than bikes. Of course, there’s always the (apocryphal) tale of the rider who left his bike on the roof, pulled into a garage and ruined a bike when it hit the ceiling. I guess I could see that being an issue, but, really, no. If you go to a race and on your way back home forget a) why you left the house in the first place and b) that you brought a bike with you to the bike race … I just don’t know what to tell you. To me, the best reason to turn down a roof rack is its height. If you're a shorter athlete or own a taller car, I can see hoisting a bike up onto a roof being too much to ask. In that case, yep, go for it with some form of rear rack. To help out, here's a section on racks in the Cars.com Advice section that details racks, and this section outlines different things that racks can carry. |
| 05/15/2008 09:49 AM Through Ian's Lens: 2009 Jaguar XF My first impression of the 2009 Jaguar XF was one of disgust. I spent much of that day in the office talking about how much I hated the front end. “How could Jaguar do this?! The headlights are all wrong!” I was up in arms about the design, and the press photos from the manufacturer were to blame. They just didn’t do the car justice. It was a bunch of flashy images that screamed “Target Audience,” not “Cool New Car.” When the New York Auto Show rolled around I got a chance to sit in a production version, and after one real-life impression, I was sold. The interior design is close to flawless, full of clean lines followed by accents of wood, metal, leather and plastic. After getting a chance to drive and photograph the XF recently, I can recant my earlier statements and tell everyone that I actually like the headlights. They fit. And so does the Supercharger. A full set of photos is below. Let me know if you think I do it justice or if the headlights still don’t work.

| 05/15/2008 08:45 AM TV Coming to Your Car
In an effort to make sure Americans never go a moment without access to television, USTelemetics has developed a system that uses WiMax wireless internet to bring TV channels into your car while it's on the move. While companies like Sirius have bet on satellite technology to conquer this last great hurdle of civilization, USTelemetics wants its new Voyager entertainment system to run over the internet and supply passengers with streaming television. The system will also integrate important diagnostic information, typical GPS and safety features. Aside from the obvious questions of driver distraction — depending on the location of the screen — we wonder if car television won't completely sink the "Connect Four: Travel Version" industry that has kept squabbling siblings happy on long road trips for generations. Internet TV Will Let You Be a Couch Potato in Traffic (Autopia) |
| 05/15/2008 07:01 AM Denver Program Hopes to Change Driving Habits
If you're looking to save a few bucks on gas this summer, one of the places you can start is your own driving habits. Certain behaviors can negatively impact your car's use of fuel. For instance, speeding up to make it through a stoplight, rapid acceleration or deceleration, and allowing your car to idle for long periods all greatly reduce the number of miles you're getting per gallon — sometimes decreasing fuel efficiency by 20%. This inspired the city of Denver to launch Driving Change, a system that allows drivers to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions they produce through poor driving practices. Accelerometers are connected to the internal systems of vehicles, and they record information that drivers can later view on the internet. The idea is that if drivers see what they’re doing wrong, they can adjust their habits. One or two individuals creating fewer emissions isn’t a big deal, but spread across a major city it could have an impact. The Driving Change pilot program hopes to expand to additional cities in an effort to make drivers everywhere more aware of their habits behind the wheel. |
